Screen Machine & Diamond Z

When Crane Group acquired Screen Machine Industries (SMI) and Diamond Z (DZ) in 2013 and 2019 respectively, both companies were already strong players in rock crushing, screening, and waste recycling equipment. Based in Ohio, SMI specialized in crushers and screening plants, while DZ, based in Idaho, produced grinders and recycling systems for green waste. Crane Group recognized an opportunity to elevate these companies through targeted investments in operational efficiencies, workforce culture, and market reach.

Under Crane Group’s guidance, SMI and DZ saw transformative improvements. Technology upgrades optimized production and inventory management across both companies, allowing them to operate more strategically and increase production efficiency. At DZ, additions totaling 36,000 square-feet boosted production capacity, helping meet growing demand in the recycling industry. Crane Group’s commitment to a strong workplace culture—with a focus on competitive compensation, values-driven leadership, and continuous improvement—created a highly engaged, productive workforce.

The results were compelling. Since 2020, both companies experienced substantial revenue and profit growth, with DZ’s capacity expansion and SMI’s expanded dealer network driving notable increases. These achievements led to the successful sale of both SMI and DZ to global industry leader Metso Corporation in 2024.
