At the age of 58, Robert Crane, Sr. forms his own plastics company, and his sons soon join him to help run it. Everything we make is for other manufacturers.

We begin producing the world’s first vinyl siding die. In a move that would turn a recession year into a profitable one, we also decide to make and sell the hula hoop.

We boast more than 80 employees, with sales topping $1.5 million annually. We run our first vinyl siding production line and begin providing private label product for customers.

Vinyl siding takes over the housing market, replacing brick and wood nationwide. Seeing an opportunity, we team with a duo out of Pittsburgh to launch Vinyl Improvement Products Company (VIPCO). From manufacturing to marketing, we own the whole chain. It’s our first foray into controlling our own destiny. We soon buy out the duo and learn an important lesson along the way: Value alignment among partners is key.

We acquire another plastics company when we buy majority interest in Compression Polymers in Scranton, Pa. We then invest in other small companies, too—Able Roof, Signature Controls, and Suburban Steel. We are diversifying our portfolio with founder-led companies that share our values, and everyone is winning.

Business is booming. Plastics production for customers like Andersen Windows is sky high. TimberTech decking is taking off. We know we can grow companies like Suburban Steel further faster but are constrained by our structure. We decide we have to get small to get large again. So we implode the business, breaking up the company up into nine LLCs overnight and drafting every single Crane employee into one of them. We name CEOs for each company, give them equity, and let them fly.

With advice from leadership and family, along with market intelligence, we thoughtfully and carefully sell our legacy plastics businesses and position Crane Group to further diversify our portfolio. With the fourth generation having joined the business, we are now an investment company focused on investing in business, people, and good.
